What makes Bakken Crude Oil so Dangerous?
According to the USDOT, ther are three factors contributing to the unique risks posed by the transportation of Bakken Crude Oil:
- It’s higher flammability & volatility, which was confirmed by data collected during Operation Classification.
- An increasing volume of Bakken Crude Oil in transportation. 9,500 rail car loads in 2008 v. 415,000 rail car loads in 2013.
- The average distance traveled by Bakken Crude Oil is 1,000 miles.

What is the PHMSA?
The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. An administration within the USDOT with the responsibility for management of the domestic transportation of all materials by pipeline and the domestic transportation of hazardous materials by highway, rail, aircraft, or vessel.
